Second Life, for those who don’t know, is a 3D world where people do all the things you can do in the real world (and more) from the comfort of their computers. It’s often compared to other 3D gaming environments or “Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games” (MMORPGs), like World of Warcraft or even Eve Online, but the difference here is that there is no game – you get to decide what you do, where you go, and how you look. 99.99% of everything you see and do within the world has been designed by the world’s residents rather than by a software company. This does bring with it a complete new bag of issues for the developers, Linden Labs, as they are constantly trying to keep the application up to speed in response to the residents’ creations.
Morvah and the Mine

Back To Mine was originally designed by Second Life resident Morvah Cornwall, who took her inspiration for the building from a Cornish tin mine. Her desire was to create a cozy, friendly and approachable hangout for anyone with a love for electronic music. Due to her own real life taking on a new, exciting, and more demanding path (one as a new mother) she couldn’t spend as much time in Second Life as was required to make more of the place, so she sold it to me in September 2008.
I hope to continue her legacy: getting people to play music that not only entertains but also reveals something about themselves, and giving the djs a chance to really wander through their music collections. (Though “dj” isn’t really an applicable term since djs outside of Second Life – including myself – often focus more on demonstrating skill than on selecting tracks.)
At present, Back To Mine has 7 resident selectors: myself (under the name Mach Volitant), Maldor Mayne, Sagesse Sautereau, Souum Cortes, Mekon Grut, Alexian Hades and Transient Zeluco.
