Ok, ok, it’s not ‘new’ new but it’s less than a year old and that’s kinda new, right? Last year my good friend and esteemed mucker DJ Johnny Clash asked me to supply a VJ mix for a 30 minute DJ mix he was asked to provide for Uncommon Sense x Deadstream broadcast which was on Twitch on July 23rd 2022. We both waited to wait until that excellent stream had got all the views it would without detracting from it by posting up another version and, well, after 10 months I reckon we’re ok now. ;) Visuals were created in synaesthesia live in which I ran through the set end to end and recorded a few passes (to keep it with a live feel about it) and then edited with some DJ footage I asked JC to provide to give it a human touch. After all, It’s always a delight to see JC’s face :)

New Video: Echaskech Live AV Mix

Last night Echaskech premiered a new audio visual set at the https://www.awamutogether.co.uk/2020 House Party - a three day stream of audio and visual entertainment to help raise money for the Awamu Charity which helps orphaned and vulnerable children in the slums of Kampala to get the education and skills that are vital to their future.

That set is now available for you to watch in your own time and leisure! The audio is from Echaskech’s performance at the Sundeck in Margate in 2019, i added the visual layer built out of the elements I’ve been constructing for the tracks over the years (featuring the visual work of Mantissa and Switzon S Wigfall III).

You can nip over to youtube and watch it again and again and again… (preferably from different IPs and using different yt accounts… Oh! No reason)

New Video: Blob Ross Season 31 Episode 1: All the Colours (teaser)

As part of my continuing and seemingly never ending fascination with Bob Ross, here is episode 1 from season 31 with (along side the intro and outro) just the colours/colors or the word colour/color mentioned. Don't ask because I don't know. But I do know there's a lot more of these to come so you better just get used to it. 

New Videos: Introducing Live play Daft Punk videos 2017

In addition to last week's Echaskech video  here's a couple of videos I made for Introducing Live's Daft Punk Performance at Wilderness 2017. A performance so good that even the N.M.E. described it as their  "unexpected highlight of the festival" 

There's a couple of videos out there that already explore the idea that Michel Gondry's iconic video is palindromic so I started with that , but I wanted to also represent the idea of - as Introducing live are a band covering Daft Punk  -  other people covering the video (of which there are quite a few if you spend days on You Tube searching them out) and that is the latter segment (sort of people from around the world doing the dance from "around the world") but when I got the audio from the band (I'd been using the Daft Punk track as guide audio) I realised that they play a little insert from "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger". Not wanting to repeat my earlier HBFS video (which also tries to show the incredible creative fandom that exists around Daft Punk) I explored the idea of improvement and - after working on another video project where I'd worked on (and abandoned) a master-cut of 80s TV shows - my brain pushed the two ideas together and came up with the homage to the bionic man and woman that just works so well with this section.

Daft Punk's Robot Rock is, well... a bit dull and repetitive - quite apt for a robot song about robots - and personally I think Introducing Live's version is much better, primarily because they can add in more dynamic range into the performance. As soon as I knew that this track was in the set list I knew what I wanted to do: a compilation of movie robots! I started to make my own and then wondered if anyone had already done this already and lo (the internet provides) I found three 'history of movie robots' videos which I sliced and diced, retimed and corrected to the audio and added a bit of Electroma foootage at the end, but really most of the exceptional hard work and credit should go to Jonathan Mann's "Every movie robot..." video

Beat Unique Presents: Infinite Scale & Kinza Live AV Sets + DJs

Look I know I've been quiet. I'm sorry about that. But since me losing my residency at Concrete, in my defence, I've been busy. Stupidly so. Some of you might know of the Disco Shed (who won "Shed of the Year 2014" in the "Normal Shed" category in Channel 4's Amazing Spaces competition) well, they have a wedding dj business called "Disco Wed" and I've joined their ranks as one of their DJs, and they have been keeping me exceptionally busy; so, if you're thinking of getting married (or even if you're not) and you need a great, friendly, adaptable and hiqh quality dj to hire, you know where to go. September also saw me at Bestival with Disco Shed on what turned out to the best Bestival yet; a great crowd, great weather, wonderful crew, a fantastic location for the Disco Shed and not to mention the undeniably awesome company of Rachel Mavis Stringbot III. It just couldn't get any better than that.

But all of that is in the past. So what of the future?

On Nov 26th 2014 at the Sebright Arms Beat Unique are presenting a night of kick ass Electronica of the very highest quality, featuring Infinite Scale (live), DJ Sets from Digitonal and Phil Winter (Tunng/Wrangler and introducing Kinza (live). I'll be on the visuals for Infinite Scale on  the night and I'm slap bang in the middle of trying to make up a completely new visual show so, if you're free that night, please come down; it'll be topper.

New Video: Tokyo Sunset/Freescha "The Sun is Still... Still..."

I've just uploaded a simple video shot from the top of the Mori Tower in Roppongi Hills, Toyko, during our Trip to Japan in Spring 2013. Music is by Freescha off their LP Freeschaland. It was shot in real time and then sped up in FCP, I've added some colour correction and some 16mm grain to warm it up. The pan and scan is all in post. I wanted the sun to be set when the vocal refrain kicked in to remind us that, even though the Sun is Set, it's still high in the sky. :) This was made to be shown at the Boards Of Canada Influences night " A Few Old Tunes" at Catch on Kinglsand Road, Shoreditch, London June 20th. Along with Echaskech's BT Tower Video and the Sepalcure's London Eye video I think I might have a thing for locked off single shot time lapsed videos from tall buildings. ;)

Electrovision #16: featuring Infinite Scale & Mach V

Dr Mo's fantabulous Audio Visual art show, Electrovision returns to The Roxy Bar and Screen on March 23rd and I've been asked to accompany the marvellous Infiinite Scale once again, supplying the visuals. I'm busy editing as much new content as I can for this show and Harmi will be showcasing tracks from his forthcoming new LP, "Living Moments" and if that's not enough to whet your appetite, there's the most amazing Max Hattler, award winning VJ Emiko and the cofounder of Forward Motion Theatre - New York based VJ Eric Dunlap. It's going to be an amazing night. Entry is £5 on the door, and get in early if you want to get a good seat/sofa.

Digital City is 7! Echaskech play live to celebrate.

  I'll be Vjing for Echaskech as part of the quite wonderous night that Digital City have line up to help us all celebrate their 7th birthday. The Venue (as always ) is secret but I'm told that it's somewhere in the Aldgate/Brick Lane/Whitechapel area. Tickets are in limited supply (especially at these prices) so don't daudle or dally. Mach V @ Back To Mine, 20110727 & 20110720, Deershed 2011 & New free Echaskech track!

Ok there's lots to tell you about this week. First off please accept my apologies for no update last weekend - I was with Echaskech at Deershed 2011 as part of Just Music's day up there, (along with lable mates Digitonal and Laki Mera) but more on that later. Last Friday morning Echaskech, along with the vocal talents of Napoleon Complex,  released their new track, "Change the Station" as a free download from Soundcloud. My video for it is on the Echaskech youtube page

both available in glorious 720p. Initially I wanted to visually represent Napoleon's desire to make his point about broadcast news. The first idea was to have Napoleon being the one holding the bill board/placard, gagged. The idea being that the act of protesting would be his message, and even as an individual it could still be done, but sadly Napoleon lives in Naples, Italy (hence the name) so we changed it to just be Dom, representing Echaskech, or the music supporting what Napoleon has to say. Dom holding up the placard with Napoleon on it is a metaphor of Echaskech's music supporting Napoleon's lyrics. Shooting took place over the easter weekend on my trusty Panasonic HDC HS300 (we got Napoleon to film himself and send us the footage) and the editing was done in Final Cut Pro, then round tripped into After Effects to comp Napoleon on to the placard by Dom and then back to mine for a final treatment in FCP. We're all very happy and proud of it.

Deershed must be one of the most child friendly festivals I've even been to. We reckoned that the children out numbered the adults 2 to 1, the average age of the audience must've been about 12 years old. On Saturday night, at 11pm, just as we were ready to go out on the tented town and party, all the entertainment stopped and by 11:20pm the arena was a ghost town... quite an eerie experience for a old festival vet like my self. However as our soundcheck was at 8.30am(!) it was probably for the best.

Though we were playing at 1pm on a blisteringly bright Sunday afternoon, I was relieved to see that Deershed had sourced a properly dark tent for us to perform in, which meant that i hadn't traipsed up with my vj rig in tow for another wasted journey, only to watch the boys play from the sidelines. Much thanks to the lovely people at Deershed and at Just Music for making it a very special day for us all. And then, if that wasn't enough, Just Music announce that one of the Echaskech tracks "The Calm" is to be included on Linn Records "Just Music exclusive" compilations. Yes, that's right: the same Linn records that orginally signed The Blue Nile. How awesome is that?

First Light by Sounds From The Ground

[best viewed full screen - the bigger the better. ;)] In Autumn 2009 I was extremely privileged to be asked to contribute a visual piece to be included in John Rixon's (a.k.a Amukidi) "Quiet Voices" show at The Tate Britain on January 8th 2010. The music John gave me to interpret was a new piece called "First Light" from Sounds From The Ground (whom I've worked with as their VJ for the last 6 years) and is available as a download only release. The footage itself all comes from various national parks in the South West of USA: We start in the Petrified Forest, move on to Canyon de Chelly and the final scene is from Zion National Park. All the content was shot on a Panasonic HDC HS300 and edited in Final Cut Pro.

Mach V @ The Tate Britain Jan 8th 2010 as part of "Quiet Voices"

Sadly there's no show this week as dufus, here managed to record the whole thing at a completely distorted level , rendering it unlistenable, however I do have other news. I've been asked to contribute a short film to accompany "First Light" by Sounds From The Ground for a show - called Quiet Voices - at the Tate Britain that's being curated by John Rixon (a.k.a Amukidi), on Friday 8th January, 2010 between 6pm and 10pm.

I'm completely stoked, excited, humbled, daunted and numerous other confusing emotions by this news as it's completely beyond what I'd ever hope to acheive as a "VJ", but I do hope that some of you can make it down to London to see the show, not only for me but for the plethora of talent that my film will be a small part of.

Normal service will resume next week. :)

Mach V at Back To Mine, 20090522

Firstly: due to "planned maintenance" I won't be able to do my show next week (and maybe for the next two weeks after that, but we'll take them as they come). It's all good - we're replacing the floor in our studio/office  - but it does mean that the everything will need to be taken down and packed away while this happens. Echaskech AV Set now on Vimeo

Echaskech AV set at Fortified Recordings Night from mach v on Vimeo. Dom & I were asked to play a DJ/VJ set at the wonderful Fortified Recordings night and this is the first 30 minutes of it. Dom use ableton to mix the tracks and I used Motion Dive Tokyo Console to blend the video. The whole thing was recorded on my Archos AV500 and then shortened in Quick Time.
