DJ Set Uploaded: Drain Club, 20091011

Recorded in the Second Life Club space "Drain" on Sunday 11/10/2009. Towards the end of the set the region was getting rather full and it started to crash which will explain my slight interruption over the later Jon Hopkins track. Apart from that it was a great night and it's wonderful to be back DJing in Second Life. :) Big thanks to Tallim, Coggy & Lanne and thanks to everyone for coming down. :) Tracklisting:

Ok, ok, - fair does. The astute amongst you will realised that this blog posting is being made while I should havin' it large to Jeff Mills at The Roundhouse but, hmmm, after a pizza and sitting on a sofa (and well, it was raining) I decided to lunch it. In my defence I did go and see School of Seven Bells yesterday (see pic) and tomorrow night (after a busy stag do for my good friend Dr Em.) I'll down at Concrete on the South Bank, next to the Hayward Gallery for our monthly "Echaskech Presents..." do, featuring Live performances from Yimino and Infinite Scale. And apologies to those using the Soundcloud streaming features, I've exceeeded my monthly upload file limit this month so can't upload this show - hopefully I'll be be allowed back on next week. Mach V @ Back to Mine, May Day Music 20090501

As it was glorious May 1st - a day where socialists and pagans both bond over the beauties of spring - it seemed right to start this show with some revolutionary music and The 180Gs version of Negativeland's 'Christianity is Stupid" seemed a great place to start. Like my own revolutionary tendencies, the theme does peter out rather quickly but I do wish you all a happy International Workers Day. :) A quick note about Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova who I was introduced to the night before though the magical film "Once". The missus and I were quite stumped by the arrival of this in our Love Film selection as neither of us remember putting it on our list and the description of it being "a Modern Musical" didn't really fill us with confindence, but oh my; what a wonderous movie.

The story revolves around an Irish Busker (played by Glen Hansard) and a Cech immigrant (Marketa Irglova) who bond over their mutual love of music and their relationship that springs around it. It's not really a musical but it is a film about music and how synergy plays a huge role in how musicians get together - the first moment when Glen and Marketa play together gave me goosebumps - and its the amazing music and the magic that happens between Glen and Marketa when they perform which is the real star of the show, here. Straight after the movie finished I was on the internet looking for the OST and thanks to emusic we now have The Swell Season, the recording that came out of the back of that LP.

Anyway - go get the movie. It's lovely. :)

A slightly shorter show this week, due to some technical difficulties with our router and setting up the stream, and sadly there's a bit of distortion on the recording, which I didn't notice until right of the end of the set - you might want to take some bass off when listening to it. I hope it doesn't distract too much from the recording. The opening track - the new Tunng single from need no water records - has taken me a while to get into but, after seeing them live with Tinariwen last week I'm in love with it. I'll try to remember to play the Soy un Caballo version next week for you. Mucho thanks to Mixmaster Morris for the Animal Hospital track "Memory", off the LP "You Are There" which, along with the Fever Ray eponymous release and the reissue of the School of Seven Bells Album, "Alpinisms" have been making my musical world a far better place, this month.

Herby and the Mach - Naxos 2002Ok... to make up for the dreadfully poor show by me on Friday and not managing to do my show from Back To Mine (trust me - it was better I didn't: after a very very good night with Dom and Dave G, firstly at The Big Chill's 15th birthday and then on to Fabric for the annual Breakspoll awards) here's a release from the mix archive. It was originally released in December 2005 and was a collaboration between myself and the marvellously talented and scrumptious Herby Vor and was lovingly constructed in Cakewalk. Mix Archive (Sleepy Time): At Home, on Sunday (Spring 2008)

DJing at Home, in Second Life - Picture by Ka RasmasonAnother set recorded from Second Life. I was itching to play some ambient tunes and I talked my friend Altern8 into letting me to dj at his excellently designed chillout room at the Second Life Club space "Home" and here's the result. It starts off with an amazing piece by Tom Heasley, called "Prologue"; Tom makes these amazing pieces just using a Tuba (worth remembering when you're out searching for antique analogue synths for that illusive pad sounds). There's also 3 tracks from Gel-Sol - whom I'm quite happy to describe as a music genius - 2 off his new Ambient LP "IZ" ("Mourning Wok" and the title track) and his last more beat oriented LP "Unifactor" (both available from Upstairs Recordings) and a track by another music genius, Jon Hopkins off his surperb "Opalescent" LP, on Just Music; oh and, of course, an Echaskech tune "A Slow Day" (you can watch the video to that by cliicking here). Mix Archive (Stay in and dance): Zbornak's Birthday Mix (Summer 2008)

Zbornak1.jpg

ZbornakOne of the great things about Second Life is the people you meet and without a doubt my life is enriched because I know Zbornak. I was asked to play at her birthday party as a surprise guest and this mix is the result - there's a little bit of me chatting at the start, but don't worry I soon shut up and get on with the mixing. ;) It wasn't a planned mix, the tracks came to me as I went along (mostly), and I was exceptionally happy with the set - thank god I recorded it! It's starts out with a few favourites, moves into the party funk then gets all heavy, wanders into the electroclash room for a bit and ends with a couple of classics - definitely one of the most enjoyable sets I've played from home. :) Jump to the mix

Mix Archive (Sleepy Time): Aural Epidural (2007)

isla1.jpg

islaIn the summer of 2007 I was approached by Bev and Pete (a.k.a MrsPirate and PiratePete) to provide a mix to accompany the birth of their first child, Isla. Initially I was thrown into a panic; having never attended a birth before (apart from my own, of course) I had no idea what they would want to hear during that incredibly emotional time; I knew it had to be long as first births have a reputation for being drawn out affairs and I knew I didn't want to stick to a tempo as, after a while that would just get annoying. They'd given me a free reign on music selection, trusting me implicitly so it was all up to me. So, I decided to put something together that would try and calm, relax, entertain, but also not try dominate the proceedings. I didn't want to have too much vocal stuff in there as I presumed there would be enough chatter/instruction/shouting/swearing going on without my mix adding to it. As fate would have it, due to the frenetic nature of a birth and some technical problems it wasn't used but has gone to keep Isla (and Bev and Pete) music entertained. Personally I use it, after a very good and heavy night, to drift off to sleep to ;)
