Beat Unique Presents: Infinite Scale & Kinza Live AV Sets + DJs

beat_unique_201411.jpg

Look I know I've been quiet. I'm sorry about that. But since me losing my residency at Concrete, in my defence, I've been busy. Stupidly so. Some of you might know of the Disco Shed (who won "Shed of the Year 2014" in the "Normal Shed" category in Channel 4's Amazing Spaces competition) well, they have a wedding dj business called "Disco Wed" and I've joined their ranks as one of their DJs, and they have been keeping me exceptionally busy; so, if you're thinking of getting married (or even if you're not) and you need a great, friendly, adaptable and hiqh quality dj to hire, you know where to go. September also saw me at Bestival with Disco Shed on what turned out to the best Bestival yet; a great crowd, great weather, wonderful crew, a fantastic location for the Disco Shed and not to mention the undeniably awesome company of Rachel Mavis Stringbot III. It just couldn't get any better than that.

But all of that is in the past. So what of the future?

On Nov 26th 2014 at the Sebright Arms Beat Unique are presenting a night of kick ass Electronica of the very highest quality, featuring Infinite Scale (live), DJ Sets from Digitonal and Phil Winter (Tunng/Wrangler and introducing Kinza (live). I'll be on the visuals for Infinite Scale on  the night and I'm slap bang in the middle of trying to make up a completely new visual show so, if you're free that night, please come down; it'll be topper.

If you're on the torrid and addictive monstrosity that we all call Facebook the event is set up here

Hope to see you there!

New Mix: 30 Minutes of Techno (Live at the Dance Tunnel 1/6/2013)

images.jpg

Last year I was lucky to get asked to be the Support DJ at Fields' night promoting Max Cooper, Ghosting Season and The Slow Revolt at the epitome of the Shoreditch cellar club: Dance Tunnel. The Club was rammed and after a brilliant set by The Slow Revolt, with half an hour before the excellent Ghosting Season I didn't know what to play. I knew what I wanted to start with - Jon Hopkins' Open Eye Signal, but after that I was going to wing it... Tracklisting

Old Bootleg "Racing Spice"

As soundcloud no longer is any fun AT ALL I am going to have to upload files to my Dropbox so you can download them so... Way back in the long ago (I think maybe... 2008?), when the men still had their own teeth and the women knew great dentists, I talked my good friend Simon Strick in to doing something foolish: a mash up of Racing Green and Aphrodite. This is the result:

New Old Mix - From Winter To Spring (2011)

This ones from the archives, from 2011. I'd always enjoyed what I'd set out to do with the mix but was never happy with the execution of the mixes and it certainly feels like a rough, skechbook mix to my ears, but 3 years on and I've not actually gone back and tidied up all the messy blending, pulls and slides (it was done on Torq - the belt drive of DVS systems). You do deserve better, but in the meantime It's time for me to let it go. Try it on a Friday night after a bad day at work and your lacking the motivation to get your glad rags on and get out dancing. So open the wine, sit back and see if it doesn't get your toes tapping. :) http://www.mixcloud.com/djmachv/from-winter-to-spring/

Sunday 14th July 2013: Return to the Big Chill Bar

As luck would have it I've asked to play at one of my favourite venues in London this Sunday, The Big Chill Bar. I've been an irregular feature down there, somewhat like an occasional table, ever since it opened back in 2005. I played the first week it was opened, I've been lucky to play at their very special New years eve and New Years day parties, as part of their celebrations for the Big Chill festival and have been involved in a number of residencies there over the years. This time they've asked me to bring in the chill and downtempo, in a very welcome move to return the bar back to it's humble laid back musical roots. Something I'm more than happy to do. See you down there!

New Videos: 6 videos from A Few Old Tunes

Screen-Shot-2013-07-06-at-13.23.58.png

Ok so I decided to upload a few more videos from the quite awesome "A Few Old Tunes" Boards of Canada influences night, so to make them more easily accessible, (and to stop me from having to write 5 new posts, one for each video) I've created an Album on Vimeo for you so you can watch them in the comfort of your home. Consider it a short day in the life of a Boards of Canada fan. Here's the link to the Vimeo Album (couch mode)

The six videos (and direct links)are

Darkstar: Light Body Clock Starter Odd Nosdam: Fat Hooks Boards of Canada: Telepath Isan: Yttrium Yimino: Horizon Freescha: The Sun is still... still...

New Video: Tokyo Sunset/Freescha "The Sun is Still... Still..."

Screen-Shot-2013-07-06-at-11.13.26.png

I've just uploaded a simple video shot from the top of the Mori Tower in Roppongi Hills, Toyko, during our Trip to Japan in Spring 2013. Music is by Freescha off their LP Freeschaland. It was shot in real time and then sped up in FCP, I've added some colour correction and some 16mm grain to warm it up. The pan and scan is all in post. I wanted the sun to be set when the vocal refrain kicked in to remind us that, even though the Sun is Set, it's still high in the sky. :) This was made to be shown at the Boards Of Canada Influences night " A Few Old Tunes" at Catch on Kinglsand Road, Shoreditch, London June 20th. Along with Echaskech's BT Tower Video and the Sepalcure's London Eye video I think I might have a thing for locked off single shot time lapsed videos from tall buildings. ;)

I Love You/You Won't Let Me - New Nightbus/Drum and Bass/Ambient Techno mix - Free mp3 download 320Kbps

Untitled-1985-Moebius.jpg

If I manage to do one "proper" mix a year I'll be happy. To define what a "proper" mix is - to separate it from any other mix I upload - a "proper" mix is one that takes planning and meticulous execution. Last year's mix was "Send in the Drones" and that took a year from planning to execution and I'm still happy with it; this has taken around 6 months of working out. It started with a Guardian article about new musical genres which defined the music by the amazing Joe Synkro as "Nightbus" a term I'd not heard before but one I was happy to adopt, even if I couldn't be sure that the article was being entirely serious. What I was aware was of a new way of looking at drum and bass, a genre which I'd spent a lot of my dj career playing and one I'd pretty much given up on. Listening to tracks from artists like Synkro, Submerge, Lapalux and the amazing new releases from Apollo (R & S records "ambient" side label) it became clear that a new wave of producers were taking lessons learned from Dubstep and applying them to Ambient Techno, R 'n B, Garage and Atmospheric Drum and Bass. I was fascinated. The result of that fascination is this mix. The first 30 minutes or so of it came together pretty easily, but then I couldn't work out where to turn next and it sat on my hard drive for 4 months, taunting me as all unfinished projects do. I almost released it as a mini mix, just to get the "monkey off my back" but I'm glad I waited and am able to release something more substantial, something worth listening to, hopefully again and again.

Though I still don't know if Nightbus is the right term for it.

Dr Mo's fantabulous Audio Visual art show, Electrovision returns to The Roxy Bar and Screen on March 23rd and I've been asked to accompany the marvellous Infiinite Scale once again, supplying the visuals. I'm busy editing as much new content as I can for this show and Harmi will be showcasing tracks from his forthcoming new LP, "Living Moments" and if that's not enough to whet your appetite, there's the most amazing Max Hattler, award winning VJ Emiko and the cofounder of Forward Motion Theatre - New York based VJ Eric Dunlap. It's going to be an amazing night. Entry is £5 on the door, and get in early if you want to get a good seat/sofa.

DJ Set from Concrete, 28th July 2012

concrete1.jpeg

Well hello there. :) Sorry for the Radio silence over the last few months, hope you haven't been too lost without me. Things have been busy for me - I've been touring with Beardyman as his Visual dude for some European gigs and the usual sets at Concrete have been going well, but I've been neglecting the website even since "Send in the Drones", really; I wanted  to let that mix sit at the top of my soundcloud page and website, and not get bogged down with my usual regular updates, but now it's time to continue. So, to start with here's 72 minutes from the last time I played at Concrete - hope you like it. Here's the Tracklisting

Juan Atkins - Dayshift (Olivers Nightshift Remix) (Outro) Heartbreak Kids - Waking Into a Prior Dream Jorge Caiado & Mathew Jonson - Ecovillage Dusky - Flo Jam Jack Dixon - You Won't Let Me Jack Dixon - Black Paint Julio Bashmore - Au Seve Dusky - Every Day Mosca - Gold Bricks, I See You Goldffinch - Model Lush - Spatial Love Todd Edwards - Love Inside MJ Cole/The Wideboys - Nothing but trouble (wideboys remix) Rodney P - Trouble (MJ Cole Rerub) Hot City - If That's How I Feel Toyc & Zulu - Needs To Be Said Guy Andrews - Hands In Mine Fidser - Check This Out

New Video: "626: 2 Revolutions of The BT Tower"

Following on from the Send in the Drones mix, here's the video that inspired the last track in that mix

The BT Tower has always been a symbol of the future, of technology and progress; it's a unique and outstanding feature on the London Skyline and even as a kid I always wanted to visit the top, especially the revolving restaurant. However, due to threats of terrorism in the 80's, it got shut down and I thought that opportunity was closed to me, until (thanks to my employer, the NSPCC) Late last year I was given the chance to work on a Charity event at the BT Tower, an opportunity I jumped at.

The film is of two revolutions , one during the day and one at night. Each revolution takes about 20 minutes and so the footage has been sped up about 10 times. The initial edit was done without music and then passed to Echaskech who the constructed the soundtrack to match my edits, I then did some fine tuning and the result is what you see. The title of the piece, "626" is the height of the BT Tower in feet.

p.s. there will be a you tube version, but later and when I can be arsed, cos You tube really does look pony compared to vimeo

p.p.s here it is

Send in the Drones: New Ambient mix, Free Download, 320kbps

artworks-000021092278-h3dvlp-original.jpeg

Ok time for a welcome change of pace and a return to the chill out room. This mix I've been planning for over a year now, but hadn't found the time to sit down and really work on the idea until just recently. Initially I wanted to make a mix of purely droney, ambient music but I kept coming across tunes that fitted too well with the flow of the mix which weren't droney at all, but the title, had to stay, so for those Ambient Drone purists, I hope you won't mind the occasional forays into recognisable melody and occasional beat. :). My original idea was to showcase ambient drones and, apart from the notable exceptions, I think that idea is still at the heart of the mix. If you disagree, well... tough. It's very important for me to thank a few people who were instrumental in making this mix happen: Ali at Inspiral Cafe who originally muttered that he didn't like ambient drones which made me want to prove him wrong; Ryan at A Strangely Isolated Place blog for the Ex Confusion track that will be coming out in ASIP's new "Places" series, along with the Echaskech "626" track which was specifically written for my BT Tower video as well as general awesomeness for all his support of awesome electronic leftfield music, without which I wouldn't have found so much of the music that I love today; to Future Sequence for their wonderfully free "SEQUENCE" compilations which you can get from their website, to Andy from Digitonal for the recommendation of the fantastic Leaves "Leaving Eleven" compilation, another great ambient freebie; to Ed McFarlane for his inspirational soundcloud mix "Bells of Adderbury Church (bellsofadderburychurch by edmacfarlane) (where I shamelessly nicked the first track from); To Echaskech for their continued patience and support, as well as the awesome 626 track; To Tom Green (Another Fine Day), for him generosity and musical genius, and finally to Jean "Moebius" Giraud (http://www.moebius.fr/), who's artwork I've used for this, who sadly died March 10, 2012. Moebius was, without a doubt, the finest and most moving comic book artist I've ever come across, and though his style and influence can been seen in most of the sci-fi blockbusters over the last 30 years or more, it's his stories that touch me the most; The Airtight Garage, Incal, Arzach just to name a few all moved in a different plane from other writers & artists, blending sci fi with a journey into surrealism, humour and spirituality. Gir, you will be missed and remembered forever and this mix is dedicated to your memory. STOE ORKEO! Mix Archive: Hi-Fidelity (1997) and Robotic Transform Cassette (1998) Classic Atmospheric DnB

IMG_1797.jpg

Ok, sets from the archives for you. Before I went by the DJ name of Mach V (and before a certain Brazilian Drum and Bass Supremo came over to these shores) I went by the name of DJ Marky. This first set comes from 1997 when I was totally in love with Atmospheric Drum and Bass; I was a true Good Looking Organisation fan boy and these mixes goes to show how much. I'd actually thought I'd lost both of these when we got rid of all our tapes (as they were originally recorded and distributed to my friends on good old TDK AD90 cassettes) but I was contacted by an old friend of mine who now lives in Australia who still had copies of the tapes and had encoded them for me. So here it is for you it all it's splendour. They still sound amazing today, 15 years later. Here's the Tracklisting
